Starting out in an experimental zany pop band The New Pollutants, Benjamin spent his formative musical years as a singer, songwriter and consummate frontman playing a diverse range of performances including The Big Day Out and The Falls Festival. Graduating from the Adelaide Conservatorium in 2004, Benjamin composed a highly successful new score for the silent film Metropolis and quickly realised that he had become passionately devoted to musical composition and the collaborative process of film making. Metropolis has since been performed at the Commonwealth Games and the Opera House among other places.
In 2007 Benjamin released his critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Dreamer’ as Mister Speed and in 2008 composed for his first feature films: The AFI award winning ‘A Northern Town’ and ‘The Tumbler’ starring Gary Sweet. He also graduated from AFTRS with an MA in Screen Composition the same year. In 2009 Benjamin composed music for the Nick Cave narrated short film ‘The Cat Piano’, which has since been heralded both in Australia and on a world stage.
Compositionally, Benjamin’s dreams are a big influence on him. He uses them to gather and refine ideas for music, as well as using them to guide his life choices. Speed makes music in order to positively shape and inspire people through the stories and projects he works on. He has a lifelong love affair with music and is overjoyed to share that with the world.
